While prosecutor Fábio Corrêa notes investigators never use emojis in isolation to incriminate suspects, these symbols contextualize dialogues, with gangs like Comando Vermelho and Terceiro Comando Puro using icons (such as bears, red flags, or Israel flags) to define hierarchies. Tragically, criminals perform street audits of residents’ phones for these symbols, triggering violent “crime courts”, while abusing networks to trade illegal material using innocent icons like corn, noodles, or pizza undetected.

According to Public Security Institute (ISP) data spanning January 2025 to March 2026, security forces in Rio de Janeiro seized 7,539 firearms, comprising 3,763 handguns, 1,859 revolvers, and 1,133 assault rifles. The capital led all municipalities with 2,604 confiscations, while neighborhoods like Penha and Costa Barros recorded the highest density of rifle seizures. Most weapons recovered were foreign-made (5,456 units), with 9mm serving as the most common overall caliber and 5.56mm dominating among confiscated rifles. Roughly 42% of all illegal firearms were intercepted directly in public thoroughfares, followed by residential seizures.
21/08/2026 – On Friday (21), an off-duty Military Police officer from São Paulo fired at an armed robber on Aníbal de Mendonça Street in the Ipanema neighborhood, South Zone. Approached while reportedly providing security for a São Paulo politician, the officer reacted to the stickup by discharging his weapon at the assailant. The suspect fled the scene, abandoning a motorcycle reportedly stolen previously at the 39th Police District (Pavuna), and escaping in another vehicle, but dropped two cell phones during his retreat. After one of the dropped phones rang with an incoming call from the suspect’s father, civil police officers at the 14th Police District (Leblon) rapidly identified the fleeing robber, who remains under investigation.
22/08/2026 – On Saturday (22), authorities issued a recapture warrant for a convict who failed to return from a Father’s Day temporary release while serving a sentence in the semi-open regime. In May 2011, he executed two pregnant women (a mother and daughter) inside their home on the Morro do Juramento in Vicente de Carvalho, North Zone of Rio de Janeiro, binding their hands and gagging them in a bathroom before shooting them due to drug faction disputes. Incarcerated since April 2012 with over 18 years remaining on his double-homicide and drug trafficking sentence, he is currently being wanted by the Rio de Janeiro State Secretariat of Penal Administration’s Search and Recapture Division (RECAP) alongside 194 other inmates who breached their leave conditions.
22/08/2026 – On Saturday (22), drug traffickers dug massive trenches and set fire to barricades along Estrada do Camboatá in the Guadalupe neighborhood, North Zone, to block armored police vehicles from entering the Complexo do Chapadão. When officers from the 41st Military Police Battalion (Irajá) arrived to fill the trenches and clear the obstacles, heavily armed criminals ambushed them, triggering an intense firefight documented by local residents on social media. Despite being met with gunfire and burning barriers, police units engaged the suspects and worked to reopen the roadway.
23/08/2026 – On Sunday (23), a three-month-old infant died at the Prontobaby Hospital in Tijuca after suffering severe physical abuse, including rib fractures, brain hemorrhaging, cardiac arrest, and seizures. Admitted in early July, the baby had temporarily recovered before suffering renewed fatal injuries following a hospital room visit from his parents (which occurred despite protective custody orders already being in place to keep them away) directly contradicting claims that the trauma stemmed from choking or CPR maneuvers. Following a joint probe by the DCAV and the Public Prosecutor’s Office, police arrested the father in the Olaria neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro, while authorities launched further investigations into potential homicide charges and possible reporting omissions by hospital staff and child protective services.
24/08/2026 – On Monday (24), the Military Police launched a major indefinite occupation across the Complexo de Israel, Complexo do Chapadão, Vargens, and Gardênia Azul in Rio de Janeiro to reclaim territory, clear street blockades, and combat drug-gang-sponsored religious intolerance. Supported by armored vehicles, tactical motorcycle units, and air support from the GAM, officers engaged in multiple shootouts while gang members set fire to hijacked trucks along Avenida Brasil to disrupt traffic. Across the Monday operations, police arrested nine suspects, including one who fled into a school on Estrada dos Bandeirantes, and seized seven assault rifles, three handguns, four grenades, tactical gear, and narcotics.
24/08/2026 – On Monday (24), an armed suspect fleeing a police operation in Vargens, West Rio, jumped into Escola Municipal Frei Gaspar and disguised himself as a school cook before being discovered in a bathroom by a cleaner. To avert panic, school administrators safely evacuated nearly 900 students to a nearby school under the pretext of a potential fire until police from the 31st BPM arrested the gunman. The suspect, originally from Espírito Santo, was among five criminals captured alongside an arsenal of rifles, handguns, and grenades seized in the nearby Pombo sem Asa and Cascatinha communities.
24/08/2026 – On Monday (24), a 15-year-old boy was sexually assaulted by a ride-hailing motorcycle driver during a trip booked via the 99 app between Santo Cristo and Santa Cruz. The driver diverted from the original route to a secluded road in Santa Cruz, where he forced non-consensual sexual acts on the minor. After receiving medical care at Hospital Municipal Pedro II, the victim and his mother reported the crime to the 36th DP. Using data provided by the app, police located the suspect’s address on Tuesday (25), where they found him alongside the motorcycle used in the crime and arrested him in flagrante after the victim identified him.
25/08/2026 – On Tuesday (25), Military and Civil Police launched a joint operation across the Complexo do Chapadão and Israel communities in Rio de Janeiro to execute arrest warrants targeting the Terceiro Comando Puro (TCP) drug faction. Criminals set fire to barricades, used cars to block streets, and previously detonated car bombs and burning trucks along Avenida Brasil in reaction to the police occupation. During the raid, which uncovered fortified bunkers and a luxury residence belonging to top faction leaders, officers killed one suspect in a shootout in Nova Iguaçu. They arrested nine individuals, including Luana Rosa de Araújo (“Madrinha da Cidade Alta”), a high-ranking associate of wanted drug lord Peixão with four outstanding warrants for murder and drug trafficking.
25/08/2026 – On Tuesday (25), investigations into the mob beating death of 37-year-old Cláudio Rafael Landeiro Moreira in Copacabana exposed a massive network of illegal private security across Rio de Janeiro. Trade organizations like Fenavist estimate over 100,000 unauthorized watchmen operate illegally across the state, outnumbering the 53,454 registered private security workers. The investigation by the 12th Police District revealed that suspect Davi Santos Machado, who struck the victim 63 times with a club after an unfounded bike theft accusation, was part of an unlicensed group paid R$ 1,500 monthly by local merchants to patrol public streets.
