RIO DE JANEIRO SECURITY INCIDENTS – 2ND BULLETIN OF JULY

A survey by the Rio de Janeiro Public Defender’s Office revealed that 9,428 investigations into homicides and attempted homicides against children and adolescents in the state have been waiting for completion since 1999. The number represents 60% of all crimes of this type in the last 24 years. The study was based on information from the Civil Police Secretariat and the Public Security Institute, on homicide crimes against people aged 0 to 17 years. According to the report, if only open inquiries are considered, the average processing time is 9 years and 8 months. Of this total, almost 79% correspond to intentional homicides. Most homicides against minors in Rio de Janeiro are with the use of firearms, there are 3,311 cases. Another data from the survey shows that, when the child or teenager is a victim of police violence, the average duration of the investigation is even longer: 10 and a half years. This year, the Fogo Cruzado Institute mapped five children and 11 teenagers killed by firearms in the Rio de Janeiro Metropolitan Region.
