31/05/2024 – Military police and criminals exchanged gunfire on Friday night (05/31) in one of the accesses to Morro do Fubá, in Campinho. Marluci Lopes Pereira, 63, was driving through the area and was shot and died. The Military Police reported that a group of armed criminals left in two cars from the Fubá Community, in Campinho, and shot at the unit’s agents. A criminal was also shot and died.
31/05/2024 – Human bones were found, on Friday morning (31/05), inside a pipe, on Dona Delfina Street, in Tijuca, North Zone of Rio. The remains were inside a manhole next to a plot of land where a real estate development is currently being built. The remains were sent to the Institute of Forensic Medicine.
31/05/2024 – Motorcyclist Alan Salles died after being run over in Vila Isabel, North Zone of Rio de Janeiro, on Friday (31/05). According to witnesses, the young man was killed after getting involved in a traffic fight with a taxi driver. During the altercation, the young man tried to break the driver’s rearview mirror. Witnesses say the taxi driver chased Alan and pressed him against a pole on Teodoro da Silva Street. The motorcyclist died on the spot and the taxi driver fled.

01/06/2024 – A man was shot dead by a penal police officer, on Saturday (01/05), on Amaro Cavalcanti Street, in Todos os Santos, North Zone of Rio. According to the Military Police, the agent reacted to an attempted robbery and hit two suspects. One died and the other was taken to the hospital. According to the police, a fake firearm, a cell phone, and a motorcycle were seized.
01/06/2024 – The police are investigating complaints made by app drivers who reported on social networks that they were taken hostage by criminals, during the last week of May, in Ilha do Governador. In audio released on social networks, they say that they were trapped in the favela and charged so that they could leave. Still, according to the drivers, they were lured to fake rides to pick up passengers, but when they arrived at Rua Magno Martins, they were surrendered by bandits from Morro do Dendê. According to the complaints, the bandits are part of the criminal organization Terceiro Comando Puro (TCP), which controls the area, they expanded their illegal business to collect fees through extortion against app drivers. Since this incident, app drivers have been avoiding the neighborhoods inside Ilha.
01/06/2024 – Seventeen men armed with assault rifles linked to the Terceiro Comando Puro (TCP) faction appear in a video published on X (formerly Twitter), on Saturday (01/06), at the top of a hill threatening the rivals of the Red Command. The group, which wields high-caliber weapons in the air, calls itself the ‘Solomon’s Top’ and threatens to take over the region of Praça Seca, in the West Zone. The area, currently dominated by the Red Command (CV), is experiencing a wave of violence due to the dispute over control of drug-selling spots.
02/06/2024 – A 28-year-old man was shot on Sunday afternoon (02), while drinking with friends in the vicinity of Mangueira, in Rio’s North Zone. According to witnesses, occupants of a car passed by shooting at a group, which was in a bar shortly after the derby between Vasco and Flamengo, at Maracanã.
02/06/2024 – The body of a 70-year-old woman was found on Sunday afternoon (02) inside her home, on Estrada Salazar Mendes de Moraes, in Taquara, West RJ. Her son, a retired firefighter, was arrested on suspicion of killing his mother. Gabriel Soares was the victim’s only child and had a drug problem for a few years.
03/06/2024 – A motorcycle taxi driver died after being run over in Copacabana, in Rio’s South Zone, in the late hours of Monday (03/06). According to witnesses, the victim was involved in an argument inside a nightclub. On the way out of the place, Luiz Antônio Basto Bispo was chased by the driver of a black Celta, identified as Guilherme Francavilla Ribeiro, 37, and fell off the motorcycle. Guilherme was arrested.
05/06/2024 – A military police officer was shot on Wednesday afternoon (05/06) during an attempted robbery on Avenida Brasil, in Rio’s North Zone. Military Police reported that the PM was off duty when he was approached by criminals in the vicinity of one of the accesses to Vila do João, in the Maré complex. Police officers from the 22nd BPM (Maré) were activated and, according to the corporation, policing was reinforced in the region.
05/06/2024 – A suspect was killed after trying to rob an off-duty military police officer on Avenida Brasil, near Deodoro, in Rio’s West Zone, on Thursday (5). According to the PM, a satellite signal jammer — used to prevent tracking of stolen cars — and a revolver were seized from the criminal. According to the first information, the suspect would have tried to steal the PM’s Renegade jeep.
07/06/2024 – Two men were arrested by military police in the early hours of Friday (7), while riding with a stolen motorcycle and a pistol in Santa Teresa, in the Central Region of Rio. According to the PM, they were found while patrolling a team from the 5th BPM (Gamboa) in the region and one of them was a fugitive and had two open arrest warrants.
09/06/2024 – A man was killed, on Sunday (9), at a traffic light, on the corner of Souza Franco and Teodoro da Silva Street, in Vila Isabel, in Rio’s North Zone. The 32-year-old merchant, who according to police would be a partner in the Parada Obrigatória bar, was in his car that was hit by several shots. The Civil Police will investigate whether the crime is linked to a misdemeanor gang. Slot machines were seized at the bar.
11/06/2024 – Two criminals and one Military Police (PM) officer were killed, and others were injured after a PM operation in Maré Tuesday morning (11/06). In retaliation, a bus was set on fire and bandits closed three of Rio’s most important expressways; Avenida Brazil, Linha Vermelha, and Linha Amarela. 24 people were arrested.
11/06/2024 – On Tuesday (11/06), 27 people responsible for corruption and drug trafficking in prison units in Minas Gerais were arrested. Between them, 10 were criminal police officers, one was a military sergeant and three were public servants. The arrests took place in Juiz de Fora, Cataguases, Goianá, Rio de Janeiro, São Gonçalo, Angra dos Reis, Mangaratiba and Três Rios.
12/06/2024 – Military police (PM) carried out a second consecutive day of operation in Complexo da Maré. A bullet went through the window of the Adib Jatene Family Clinic in the early hours of the morning, leaving residents in the area afraid to leave their houses and 44 schools closed.
12/06/2024 – A Militia money laundering scheme that generated R$30 million, from 2021-2024, was the target of a Civil Police operation that took place on Wednesday (12/06) in Rio. The scheme targeted individuals and companies. When executing the 56 warrants that were issued, agents wanted to collect evidence, seize assets, and arrest those involved, in addition to recovering illicit assets.
12/06/2024 – A gang of prostitutes used a database to blackmail clients and profited around R$200,000 in Rio. After conducting their business, the call boy would request payment through PIX to obtain the victim’s personal information such as the victim’s family and address, which was then used for blackmail. The victims appeared to be heterosexual men with families who wished their romantic encounters stayed confidential. One man has been arrested.
12/06/2024 – Wednesday (12) a man was sentenced to 22 years in prison after dressing up as a delivery man and committing a robbery homicide. The convict admitted to robbing the victim, however, he stated that the gun went off unintentionally.
12/06/2024 – Students from an Integrated Public Education Center (Ciep) in Santíssimo were involved in a widespread fight on Wednesday (12/06). An inspector tried to break up the fight and ended up being attacked. Witnesses claim the fight began due to jealousy from one of the students.
13/06/2024 – 270kg of smuggled material was seized in Caju, in the West zone of Rio. Among the smuggled material the police found marijuana, electronics, and Ozempic, a medication for diabetes which must be prescribed by a doctor. The shipment was labeled to contain 270kg of English books, instead of the smuggled items.
13/06/2024 – A taxi driver was arrested in Rio Comprido on Thursday (13/06), for committing fraud in the city transport app paid for by the city hall. The man was considered a fugitive from justice. He was a known associate of a gang that defrauded the taxi app by creating multiple taxi profiles and coercing customers.
13/06/2024 – A 12-year-old girl is in critical condition after she was caught in the crossfire between police and drug traffickers on Ilha do Governador on Thursday (13/06). According to police reports, they were investigating allegations of extortion in Pixunas when they were attacked by drug traffickers. The girl was hit by a stray bullet.
13/06/2024 – Four men were arrested on Thursday (13/06) for a banking scam that generated half a billion reais from 2020-2022. The scam took place in various places such as Barra da Tijuca in the west zone of Rio. The gang used false documents to open shell companies to obtain loans from banks.
17/06/2024 – On Monday (17) morning, the attempted robbery of a truck ensued on Estrada do Itararé. The bandits tried to steal the vehicle, which was carrying a load of cleaning supplies valued at R$64,000. The gang was intercepted by police and during the confrontation traffic was closed on Estradado Itararé and Avenida Itaoca. No one was injured and one suspect was arrested.
17/06/2024 – Police officers were patrolling in Vila Kennedy (Bangu) when they were attacked by criminals leading to a shootout on Monday (17). The shootout took place near a school leading the students to hide under their desks to avoid stray bullets. A rifle was seized. No one was arrested.
18/06/2024 –Two people died during an attempted robbery on Tuesday (18) morning in Higienópolis. Four suspects tried to steal a motorcycle in the early hours of the morning when police intercepted a shootout between the two parties. Two people on the bus and bus stop were caught in the crossfire, one suspect was brought into custody, and the other three escaped.
18/06/2024 – Civil Police carried out a third operation in Maré in 8 days on Tuesday (18). The Cargo Robbery and Theft Police Station (DRFC) carried out three search and seizure warrants in the area, one of the thefts had an estimated loss of R$3 million in clothing items. One person was arrested.
18/06/2024 – Two young people were shot in an attempted robbery in Recreio dos Bandeirantes in the early hours of Tuesday (18). The boys were returning home from work when they suffered an attempted robbery while in their vehicle, the driver reacted to the approach and exchanged shots with the robbers.
19/06/2024 – One of the main roads in Rio Comprido, Rua Barão de Petrópolis, was closed due to a demonstration against the police operations in the area that took place on Wednesday (19). Onde Tem Tiroteio (OTT) reported on social media that the police operation began at 8:00, with reports of a shooting and armored vehicles circulating Morro do Fogueteiro. The protest led to a bus being hijacked to be used as a barricade.
20/06/2024 – On Thursday (20) the Civil Police began Operation Bandeira Livre against drug traffickers on Ilha do Governador who have been extorting money from app drivers. The investigation shows that traffickers charged drivers in the area and created weekly charge sheets to identify the drivers who were authorized to work in the region. If the driver was not authorized to drive, they would damage or burn the vehicle.
21/06/2024 – The Homicide Precinct (DH) is investigating the death of Tatiana Mendonça de Queiroz Campos, 29, from Santa Cruz, in Rio’s West Zone. She was murdered on Friday (21) when she was at home. According to her relatives, Tatiana was sleeping when she was attacked by her ex-boyfriend. The victim’s daughter, an 11-year-old girl, found her mother’s body. According to witnesses, he choked her to death and fled. After being denounced, he was arrested in Paracambi, in the Baixada Fluminense.
23/06/2024 – Agents of the Federal Police (PF) and the Brazilian Navy arrested 10 people in flagrante delicto for illegal fishing, in the region of Costão do Vidigal, in the South Zone of Rio, on Sunday (23). According to the PF, Operation Blue Sea, which also had a partnership with the State Institute of the Environment (Inea), aimed to monitor irregular fishing in the inland waters off the coast of Rio.
23/06/2024 – Diego Andrade de Oliveira, a 37-year-old systems analyst, died after being shot on Avenida Brasil, near Penha, in Rio’s North Zone, in the early hours of Sunday (23). He was returning from a party with his wife when he was injured. According to reports, Diego allegedly tried to overtake when armed men got out and shot at the victim. The criminals then fled. Motorcyclists stopped to help his wife rescue Diego, but he died at the scene.
24/06/2024 – The Federal Police, in a joint action with the International Task Force to Combat Arms and Ammunition Trafficking (FICTA), arrested on Monday (24), in flagrante delicto, a man and a woman who supplied war materials to organized crime. The equipment, received through parcels from the Post Office, was destined for drug traffickers. Among the seized products, which were to be sold to traffickers, were imported and high-capacity holographic sights, scopes, stocks, and rifle magazines, capable of storing 50 rounds of ammunition and firing up to 50 rounds uninterruptedly. The criminals were detained in flagrante delicto while picking up the packages at the Franchised Post Office, located in Complexo da Maré, in the North Zone of Rio.
25/06/2024 – A mother and son were the victims of a vehicle robbery on Tuesday (25) in Taquara outside their home. While the woman was unloading the car one of the bandits approached her and threatened to hurt her son if she didn’t give them her car keys.
26/06/2024 – Attempted cable theft caused a fire in the Santa Barbara tunnel on Wednesday (26) night. The tunnel was closed for 40 minutes, according to witnesses the suspect received an electric shock, however, no injuries were reported. The company that owns the cables stated that no customers had their services interrupted.
26/06/2024 – On Wednesday (26) a man was arrested in Copacabana after punching a woman in the face. The victim was walking along the sidewalk on Rua Barata Ribeiro when the aggressor surprised her with the attack before he ran away. Three men chased after the suspect before he was arrested by the Policing Battalion in Tourist Areas.
26/06/2024 – A shootout between criminals took place in Costa Barros, the north zone of Rio de Janeiro, on Wednesday (26). According to the initial information available the shootout occurred due to criminals from the Red Command (CV) invading Morro do Chaves, which is controlled by the Third Pure Command (TCP).
26/06/2024 – Six women were arrested on suspicion of running a false loan scam in Rocha Miranda on Wednesday (26). According to the investigation, the group had access to the financial lives of the victims and contacted them through an automatic dialing program and offered loans, however, the loans would go entirely to the gang.
27/06/2024 – Two Former executive directors of Lojas Americanas are the target of the Operation Disclosure against fraud. The operation is led by the federal police and the lawsuit is against fraud worth R$ 25.3 billion from the company. On Thursday (27) agents carried out two arrest warrants and 15 search and seizure warrants. The suspects have left the country and were included on the Interpol Red Diffusion list.
28/06/2024 – Two residents were shot during a police operation in Complexo da Penha on Friday morning (28). The police officers were in the area to serve four arrest warrants against drug lords from other states who are allegedly hiding in Penha.
TRENDS & ADVICE
- During summer months, mass robberies and thefts in touristic spots become the most prevalent security risks in Rio de Janeiro, specially in the city’s South Zone.
- Crowded beaches and its vicinities should be avoided.
- Avoid any display of wealth (jewelry, cell phones), but always carry a small amount of money (R$50) to hand over to muggers.
- In case of robbery: cooperate, do not try to run after the assailant as he or she might not be alone or turn violent.
- In the case of being in the immediate vicinity of a shootout:
- Lay on the ground and seek cover.
- When it is safe to do so, find the nearest building, stay away from windows, do not move unless you are sure that the gunfire has ended.
- Avoid walking alone in poorly lit areas or beaches after nightfall. Avoid walking through tunnels.
- Avoid the vicinity of crime-prone areas such as ‘communities’ (so-called ‘favelas’) and lower-income neighborhoods.
- Be always cautious, even in the areas considered safe such as Downtown, Botafogo, Copacabana and Ipanema. Exercise caution in the Centro during the day and avoid the area after nightfall and on Sundays.
- Be careful when using the GPS as they may lead you to unsafe areas controlled by organized crime. Prefere Cooperative taxis instead of driving yourself.
