Six weapons belonging to the 27th Military Police Battalion, based in the Vargem Grande neighborhood in the far south of São Paulo city, have gone missing from inside the unit. The State Secretariat of Public Security confirmed the incident, although the date on which the weapons disappeared has not been disclosed. Authorities have also not provided details about the specific models or calibers of the missing firearms. The Military Police have opened an inquiry to investigate the circumstances surrounding the disappearance, locate the weapons, and identify those responsible. According to the Secretariat, investigative measures are already underway. So far, however, no one has been arrested in connection with the case.

Other Cases
This is not the first case involving weapons under the custody of public security or military institutions that have disappeared in São Paulo state. One of the most significant incidents occurred in 2023, when weapons were stolen from the Army’s War Arsenal in Barueri, in the Greater São Paulo area. Part of the stolen arsenal was later abandoned in different locations: ten weapons were recovered in Rio de Janeiro and another nine were found in São Roque, in São Paulo state. Two firearms remained missing. Investigations also indicated links between the theft and organized crime. Four military personnel and five civilians were convicted by the Superior Military Court in connection with the case. Among those convicted was a corporal who was allegedly recruited by his brother-in-law, a civilian identified as a member of the First Capital Command (PCC), to participate in the theft.
February
In February of this year, another case involving weapons missing from police custody came to light in the São Paulo metropolitan area. Authorities discovered that 52 firearms had disappeared from a safe at the Itapecerica da Serra police station. The missing cache consisted mainly of pistols and revolvers seized between 2011 and 2021 and linked to both criminals and police officers involved in different investigations and incidents. The disappearance raised questions about internal controls, storage procedures, and accountability regarding seized firearms kept inside police facilities. The Civil Police Internal Affairs Division is investigating the case to determine when and how the weapons disappeared, identify possible security failures, and establish whether public officials or other individuals were involved in removing the firearms from police custody.
Analysis:
The disappearance of six firearms from a Military Police facility in São Paulo represents a significant internal security concern because weapons held by law enforcement agencies are strategic assets that can be diverted into the criminal market. The immediate priority should be to establish whether the firearms were stolen through an external intrusion, removed by an insider, or lost because of weaknesses in inventory and storage procedures. Regardless of the mechanism, the incident raises concerns about accountability within the unit, particularly if discrepancies were not detected promptly. Every missing weapon should be treated as a potential security threat until recovered, since firearms originating from police stocks can be particularly valuable to organized criminal groups.
