According to the Military Police and local residents, the shooting, audible across various points of Rio’s North Zone, including the major intersection of Maxwell and Uruguai streets, stems from an ongoing territorial war that began on July 22 between the TCP-controlled Morro do Cruz and rivals from Chácara do Céu.

26/07/2026 – On Sunday (26), a man died after being shot in the Borda do Mato area of Grajaú during ongoing territorial clashes in Rio’s Grande Tijuca region. His death follows that of an 80-year-old local resident, who was fatally struck by a stray bullet in his Chácara do Céu home during the same feud between the TCP-controlled Morro do Cruz and rival gangs. In response to the escalating violence that began on July 22, the 6th Military Police Battalion has intensified patrols across the affected communities while the Capital Homicide Division (DHC) investigates the fatalities.
26/07/2026 – On Sunday (26), intense gunfire erupted near Avenida Brasil as Comando Vermelho (CV) traffickers attempted to invade the Cidade Alta and Cinco Bocas favelas within the Terceiro Comando Puro (TCP)-controlled Complexo de Israel. The clashes triggered a major response from the Military, Civil, and Federal Highway Police, who reinforced patrols across Cordovil, Brás de Pina, Parada de Lucas, and Vigário Geral to restore order. 27/07/2026 – In retaliation for the arrest of their general manager, Philip “Bacurau” do Nascimento Firmino, Comando Vermelho (CV) gangsters launched a violent punitive operation on Monday (27), hijacking at least five buses to block roadways, setting fires, and attacking a local police post in Rio’s West Zone. The capture of the gang leader occurred during a Military Police raid in Gardênia Azul, escalating a months-long war in which CV leadership (including kingpin Edgar Alves de Andrade, “Doca”) has launched drone bomb attacks and physical invasions to wrest control of neighboring Rio das Pedras from local militias.
27/07/2026 – On Monday (27), officers from the 27th Military Police Battalion (Santa Cruz) thwarted an attempted territorial invasion by Comando Vermelho (CV) drug traffickers targeting the Largo do Correia and Complexo da Cachamorra areas in Campo Grande, West Zone. The heavily armed group, linked to former militia member turned CV operative Rodney Lima de Freitas (known as “RD” or “Gaguinho”), hijacked a van to breach a residential complex before abandoning the vehicle and fleeing into nearby woods. Military Police have reinforced security across Santa Cruz and Guaratiba to track down the suspects, as the faction continues its push to seize territories historically controlled by local militias.
27/07/2026 – On Monday (27), an unregistered fake taxi driver was arrested in Copacabana for running a card machine scam targeting passengers in the city’s South Zone. Officers from the 15th Police District (Gávea), supported by the city’s Civitas surveillance network, tracked down the suspect’s unauthorized vehicle following victim complaints of exorbitant fares charged via tampered card readers. Authorities seized altered payment terminals, bank cards, and cell phones from the suspect, who admitted to the crimes and holds 19 prior police records for similar offenses, before charging him with fraud.
28/07/2026 – On Tuesday night (28), a high-speed pursuit and heavy shootout along Avenida Brasil, in the Ramos neighborhood, left five people dead, including Military Police officer Fernando Plácido Roberto Rocha and four armed suspects. Officers from the Expressways Battalion (BPVE) attempted to stop two suspicious vehicles moving from Vila Kennedy toward Penha; after being fired upon, police pursued the suspects down Avenida Brasil until Shock Battalion (BPChoque) units set up a blockade at Ramos. The fleeing car crashed into a median, triggering an intense firefight that injured another officer and three other individuals, while authorities seized six assault rifles, three handguns, a grenade, and bulletproof vests.
28/07/2026 – Federal police arrested a suspect on Tuesday morning (28), in the Tijuca neighborhood, North Zone, following an investigation into death threats sent to students at Colégio Pedro II. During the execution of a search and seizure warrant at his residence, officers found physical copies of the threatening letters alongside files containing child sexual abuse material on his computer. The man was taken into custody on charges of storing child abuse media while civil and federal authorities continue analyzing the seized devices to determine the full scope of his criminal activities.
29/07/2026 – On Wednesday morning (29), the Civil Police launched a major operation targeting the Terceiro Comando Puro (TCP) across the Vila Aliança, Senador Camará, and Jabour communities in the West Zone. The victim was hit by three suspects on a motorcycle during a Civil Police operation in Complexo da Pedreira, succumbing to her injuries at Ronaldo Gazolla Municipal Hospital despite receiving emergency assistance. Officers arrested all three suspects, including an injured minor with an outstanding apprehension warrant, while civil authorities investigated the incident alongside a broader crackdown on cargo theft and barricade removals across neighboring communities.
