A new system to combat phone scams will identify companies that call. The ‘Verified Origin’ feature will identify who is calling, even if the number is not saved on the cell phone; according to the National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel), the new feature is expected to be released in October.

How it Works
Phone scams, known as “0800 scams”, have seen more than 4,000 calls per hour in the last year. In this system, criminals contact people pretending to be bank employees and ask for financial information to commit fraud.
New Tool
To avoid this type of situation, Anatel is developing the “Verified Origin”, a system that will identify the origin of unknown calls. The tool will work based on a database with contact information from several companies. Thus, when registered companies make calls, the tool will identify the origin of their calls. There will be no costs for consumers.
Increased Security
According to Anatel, the goal of the measure is to increase security against scams that use fake numbers and provide more information for consumers to decide whether or not to answer a call, avoiding unwanted calls.
You Still Need to Be Careful
The initiative is aimed at identifying authentic calls, but it is not capable of guaranteeing protection against theft of your data. Furthermore, Anatel emphasizes that customers will not need to download any program to join the system.
Samsung
Samsung confirmed that it is preparing to join the feature and described that a “check” symbol will appear on the cell phone screen, similar to the one that appears on verified accounts on social networks, next to the logo of the company that is calling.
Analysis:
The introduction of the “Verified Origin” feature by Anatel marks a significant step in combating the pervasive issue of phone scams in Brazil, particularly those involving criminals impersonating bank employees to extract sensitive financial information. This new system will enhance consumer security by verifying the origin of calls from registered companies, thus reducing the chances of falling victim to fraudulent schemes. However, while this tool will help identify legitimate calls, it is not a foolproof solution against data theft, and users must continue to exercise caution.
As phone scams become increasingly sophisticated, this initiative represents a necessary evolution in the fight against digital fraud. However, for it to be truly effective, it must be part of a broader strategy that includes consumer education, robust law enforcement, and continuous technological advancements to stay ahead of cybercriminals’ tactics.
