Among Brazil’s five regions, the North had the second worst rate of violent intentional deaths (IVD) in 2022. The region had 36.5 IVDs per 100,000 inhabitants. Despite the bad results in comparison to other regions, the North region followed the national trend of fall in the number of IVDs, with a reduction recorded when compared to 2021. The region has the third highest total number of IVDs. Moreover, the region had 12 cities among the 50 most violent, 7 in a single state.

North’s Violent Deaths
From 2021 to 2022, the North Region had a 2.7% decrease – the second biggest one among the regions – in the total number of intentional violent deaths – intentional homicides, robberies followed by murder, intentional bodily injury followed by death, and feminicides, which represent less 129 deaths. Cases went from 6,462 to 6,333.
Amapá and Pará – State with the Worst Results
Amapá was the state with the worst results in the North region, with 50.6 violent intentional deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, the highest rate in the country. The state reached this position despite a 24.4% decrease in the number of IVDs recorded. 371 violent deaths were reported, which is a very low absolute result when compared to other states. It is a consequence of its small population, 733,508 (IBGE-2022). Despite the high rate, in terms of total numbers, it sits quite behind. Pará had the highest absolute result, with 2,997 violent deaths, a figure obtained after a 1.1% increase.
12 Cities Among the 50 Most Violent
The North has 12 cities listed among the country’s 50 most violent. Here, state that stands out here is, once more, Pará, where 7 of the most violent cities are located. The most violent is Altamira (7th), with 70.5 IVDs, it is followed by Altamira (70.5 – 7th), Itaituba (61.6 – 15th), Marabá (51.8 – 26th), Paragominas (49.3 – 32nd), Paraupebas (46.9 – 35th), Castanhal (44.2 – 45th), and Marituba (41.6 – 50th)
Macapá – Most Violent Capital
The worst security conditions according to the IVD rate, was that of the capital of Amapá, Macapá. The city had a 6.3% increase in violent deaths, with absolute numbers going from 190 to 202, moving the IVD rate to 70. The rate was the highest seen for a state capital in 2022. The second and third places belong to Salvador (BA), with 66, and to Manaus (AM), with 53.4. However, in terms of absolute numbers, this title went to Salvador, with 1,596 deaths; to Rio de Janeiro, with 1,319; and to Manaus, with 1,102.
