Residents of several neighborhoods in São Paulo reported feeling tremors late Thursday night (18) as a result of a 7.3 magnitude earthquake that hit Antofagasta, Chile. There were reports in the neighborhoods of Perdizes, Pinheiros, Pompeia, Vila Madalena, Mooca, Água Rasa, Santana, Tatuapé, Sacomã, central region, and also in Guarulhos and Osasco, in the metropolitan region, and municipalities in the interior.

Earthquake in Chile
According to the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC), the 7.3 magnitude earthquake in Chile occurred at a depth of 128 km.
No Injuries
Civil Defense confirmed that the tremors in the capital of São Paulo are reflections of the Chilean earthquake. It reported that the tremors felt in São Paulo were of low intensity and presented minimal risk of damage. There is no record of damage or injured people in São Paulo or other cities in the state.
Location of São Paulo
According to the Seismology Center of the University of São Paulo (USP), the capital of São Paulo is located on a sedimentary basin that has the characteristic of amplifying seismic waves. Therefore, earthquakes that occur in the Andes can be perceived in São Paulo, mainly in higher neighborhoods and in residential buildings.
