Technologies that identify people’s faces in public places have multiplied in São Paulo. Mayor Ricardo Nunes promises to invest 140 million reais to install 20,000 facial recognition cameras in the city by 2024.
In the Metro, the resource became a reality: on Line 1-Red, 1,381 pieces of equipment started operating in November, and the total number of “electronic eyes” in the transport system should reach 5,088 in two years. Other public places, such as Ibirapuera Park, have also recently adopted the technology, which was seen at the center of a municipal public notice earlier this month.
Facial recognition cameras can identify people who appear on the screen. More than that: the technology crosses information extracted from different databases about citizens. For example: a street camera integrated with the Civil Police records could issue an alert in case someone wanted by the Justice passed by that location.
