The national electric power transmission system will improve its security by adopting video cameras and drones to monitor its critical structure. Structures that are close to highway will also receive extra attention from the Federal Highway Police (PRF).
The measures were announced on 17 January by the Minister of Mines and Energy (MME), Alexandre Silveira, as a response to recent attacks against transmission towers. A report published on 16 January highlighted that there were seven cases of vandalism on power transmission towers in the country, and four of them had structural failure.
According to the minister, the Federal Police (PF) has already started several investigations, and the attacks on the towers are also monitored by the Institutional Security Cabinet of the Presidency (GSI) and the Ministry of Justice. Nevertheless, the minister said that, so far, authorities cannot ensure that the attacks were politically motivated sabotage.
