On Tuesday (04/06), the Ministry of Justice extended the stay of the National Force in Rio de Janeiro for another 90 days — therefore, until 3 September. But at the same time, the federal government should not renew the Law-and-Order Guarantee (GLO) operation that reinforced security at ports and airports in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo.

Fourth Extension
This is the fourth extension this year. It was made at the request of the Cláudio Castro government. The National Force arrived in Rio with around 300 agents to reinforce the state’s security in October 2023, on the order of the then Minister of Justice, Flávio Dino.
GLO
Signed in November last year, the GLO authorized the employment of military personnel in the ports of Rio de Janeiro, Itaguaí (RJ), and Santos, in addition to the airports of Guarulhos (SP) and Galeão (RJ). There was also reinforcement in inspection on the Brazilian side of Lake Itaipu and in the border region, in the states of Mato Grosso do Sul and Paraná. The initial forecast was that the operation would be completed at the beginning of May, but it ended up being extended by President Lula (PT) until Tuesday (04/06).
Rio Security Crisis
The federal government decided to enact the GLO to help the government of Rio de Janeiro during a public security crisis triggered by the death of a militia member. At the time, criminals closed streets and set fire to several vehicles. At the end of April, the Ministry of Defense released a six-month GLO report that indicated the arrest of 3,178 people, in addition to the seizure of 282 weapons and 172.3 tons of drugs.
Analysis:
The extension of the National Force’s stay in Rio de Janeiro for another 90 days is a necessary measure, considering the current security context in the state. This is the fourth extension of the National Force’s mandate this year, carried out at the request of Cláudio Castro’s government, highlighting the persistence of ongoing public security problems that the state government cannot deal with alone. The Law and Order Guarantee (GLO) operation, which will not be renewed, was initially implemented in November last year to reinforce security at ports and airports in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, as well as other strategic regions. It aimed to prevent the arrival of weapons and drugs into large urban centers.
