The deployment of weaponized and surveillance drones represents a major escalation in territorial warfare between Rio de Janeiro’s main criminal factions, including Comando Vermelho (CV) and Terceiro Comando Puro (TCP). Leading up to August 2026, police recorded at least seven incidents of drone-dropped explosives and aerial reconnaissance across the North and West zones. Factions utilize modified commercial devices to conduct targeted bombings, locate rival positions, and track police activity. In response, Civil Police established a specialized drone coordination unit (Coant) and allocated over R$ 2.1 million toward advanced counter-intelligence technology.
