There were 15% fewer cases of robbery in the first month of this year, with 17,661 records. The drop in thefts, which reached 46,541 cases, was approximately 2%. In the capital, these reductions were 14% in robberies, with 10,373 records, and 3% in thefts, with 18,729 occurrences.
Downtown São Paulo
In the city of São Paulo, police stations serving the Central Zone, Sé, and Campos Elíseos also saw a drop, but the Bom Retiro neighborhood recorded increases of 42% in robberies, with 112 cases, and 39% in thefts, with 390 records.
Homicides
Homicide victims in the capital were 42, compared to 43 in January 2023, and in the state, 228, less than the 258 people killed last year. The records of victims of robbery followed by death, which are less frequent, increased in the state with 16 deaths compared to 12 in the same period in 2023.

Vehicle robbery fell 29% in the state, with 2,251 cases, and thefts, with 7,665, remained stable when comparing January in 2024 and 2023. In the capital, there was a 24% drop in vehicle robberies, and thefts fell 2%.
RapesWith historic highs in recent months, rape records continued to increase, with 239 incidents compared to 227 in January last year. Across the state, there were 1,196 registrations, an increase of 3%.
Analysis:
Data released by the Public Security Secretariat (SSP) regarding the reduction in records of robberies and thefts in the state and city of São Paulo in January compared to the same period last year is certainly encouraging. The decline in cases indicates positive trends in public safety.
However, it is important to note that certain neighborhoods, such as Bom Retiro, experienced increases in both robberies and thefts. This highlights the need for targeted interventions and localized strategies to address specific crime challenges in certain areas, particularly those under the influence of the now “mobile Cracolândia”.
The decrease in homicides in both the city and the state is another positive aspect of the report. Nevertheless, it cannot necessarily be attributed to an improvement in the state’s security conditions. Researchers and analysts claim that this is also occurs because the First Capital Command (PCC), a criminal faction that dominates São Paulo, seeks to establish a type of territorial and social control in certain areas, imposing its own rules and seeking to avoid armed conflicts that could attract the attention of the authorities and harm their interests.
