RIO DE JANEIRO SECURITY INCIDENTS – MAY MONTHLY BULLETIN

Despite a decrease in overall shootouts in the Rio de Janeiro metropolitan area in April 2026, police actions accounted for more than half of the incidents (53%)—the worst rate for the year so far. The key findings: Armed robberies worsened: Shootings during robberies increased by 50% compared to April 2025, averaging one person shot per day; Shootouts decreased: Total shootouts fell by 13% compared to the same period in 2025; Police violence: Police actions resulted in 17 deaths and 48 injuries; Armed group conflicts: Disputes between factions and militias are rising, with 2026 already showing the highest number of people shot in such conflicts in four years. Expert Analysis: Carlos Nhanga from the Fogo Cruzado Institute stated that armed violence is now deeply embedded in daily life, turning robberies from property crimes into central drivers of violence. Duque de Caxias: 9 shootings, 7 dead and 2 injured. Nova Iguaçu: 9 shootings, 5 dead and 1 injured. Niterói: 9 shootings, 1 dead and 2 injured. Neighborhoods: Maré: 6 shootings and 3 injured. Taquara (Rio de Janeiro): 5 shootings, 1 dead and 4 injured. Curicica (Rio de Janeiro): 5 shootings, 1 dead and 2 injured. Piedade (Rio de Janeiro): 5 shootings, 1 dead and 2 injured. Barros Filho (Rio de Janeiro): 5 shootings and 5 injured.

Rio de Janeiro has already recorded 16 people killed by gunfire during robberies or attempted robberies in 2026, according to data from the Fogo Cruzado Institute. The average indicates one death every two days in the metropolitan region. This number represents almost double the number recorded in the same period of 2025, when nine people were killed between January 1st and 26th. In addition to the deaths, another 12 people were injured in such incidents this year, totaling 28 gunshot victims. In the same period of 2025, the survey indicated 27 people shot in robberies or attempted robberies, with nine deaths and 18 injuries.
