Complaints of cyber scams skyrocketed in São Paulo this year. There are already almost 40 people deceived per day. Cybercrime has skyrocketed in recent years – that’s what the numbers from the Public Security Secretariat of São Paulo show. In 2019, there were 921 complaints about scams; in 2020 there were 2,573 scam complaints; in 2021, there were 2,213 complaints about scams and this year (2022), until the month of September, there were 10,366 complaints about scams.

27/11/2022 – A father reacted to an attempted robbery while taking his son to school in the Ipiranga neighborhood, South Zone. The case was caught by a security camera at the door of the children’s school, on Rua Oliveira Alves. In the images, a criminal gets off the back of a motorcycle with a gun and even points it at the child, who is getting out of the car with his father to go to school. The father is reluctant to hand over his belongings and ends up reacting. The criminal even shoots but does not hit anyone. He runs away, and father and son enter the school.
27/11/2022 – An aircraft pilot fell victim to the love scam. He arranged a date near the Raposo Tavares highway, when he arrived, he was surrendered by the criminals. He was held hostage for almost 14 hours and lost more than R$20,000. Six men were arrested, and a minor apprehended in the West Zone.
27/11/2022 – A couple was kidnapped as they drove out of their home garage in the West Zone. They were taken to a captivity where they stayed for 17 hours. The criminals cleaned the victims’ bank account and then robbed their residence.
28/11/2022 – The police freed an English man who had been kidnapped in Jaraguá, North Zone, and arrested three criminals that hold him captive. The Civil Police received an anonymous complaint that pointed out that a victim had been kidnapped in the region, with the information of those responsible for the crime. Upon arriving at the scene, the police located the three criminals described.
28/10/2022 – A family was robbed as they arrived home after watching the Brazil football game in Vila Santo Estefano, South Zone. In the security camera footage, you can see when the woman was waiting for her children to get out of the car and then another car appears on the street and two thugs get out. The children’s father notices the robbery and returns to protect the children. Thieves search the couple and take several personal objects from the victims. Until they finally leave, one of them taking the family car.
29/11/2022 – The police arrested members of the gang known as the ‘remote control gang’. Criminals cloned garage door remotes and broke into high-end homes. Security cameras recorded how they acted. According to investigations, they have already been connected to at least 10 robberies reported in the last 3 months.
30/11/2022 – A stolen cargo was found in a shed in the Imirim region, North Zone. The driver of the vehicle and the helper were taken hostage in Grajaú, South Zone. The Military Police were called to respond to a complaint from the carrier about a truck with a load of sneakers that was stolen.At the scene, officers from the Metropolitan Military Police Battalion (BPM/M) climbed through the roof of the shed and found two criminals unloading the goods. According to the military police, a third man contacted one of the detainees and reported that he released the driver and the assistant in the Grajaú region.
01/12/2022 – Two teenagers were apprehended after stealing the car of an elderly woman in Cursino, South Zone. They drove about seven hours with the vehicle. According to the Military Police, the group had tried to break into and rob a store. However, they gave up when a police car passed by the scene. Then they went after the elderly woman. Security cameras caught five suspects on foot near the victim. The images showed the group acting quickly, pulling the woman out of the vehicle.
01/12/2022 – A video taken by security cameras shows the moment when a group breaks the glass, invades and robs a motorcycle shop in Vila Sônia, West Zone. The images show three boys initially breaking the store’s glass. After managing to enter, a new group of more than 20 people invade the place and participates in the looting. According to the police, they organized themselves through cell phone conversation groups.
01/11/2022 – A man and two women were arrested by the Military Police (PM) after security cameras recorded the moment they stole clothes from a Mooca Plaza Shopping store, in Vila Prudente, East Zone. After store employees suspected the behavior of the three, they warned the mall’s security guards, who called the PM. In the images, it is possible to see the moment when the women take the clothes and hide them in a bag, leaving the store without paying. A man standing nearby takes cover for them.
